Clinical Skill Lab
Before a HIMS student ever performs a procedure on a real patient at LRH or FCTH, they perform it correctly, repeatedly, and under supervision in the Clinical Skill Lab. This is where clinical confidence is actually built.
Lab Areas
- Simulated general ward — multi-bed setup for practicing routine nursing care, vital sign monitoring, and patient handling
- Semi-private room simulation — for practicing individualised patient care and communication skills
- Emergency response (E/R) station — for practicing rapid assessment and emergency intervention under time pressure
- Nursery / maternal & child health area — directly supporting LHV and maternal health training
Equipment & Method
- Anatomical manikins and task trainers for injections, catheterisation, wound care, and vital signs
- Standardised procedure checklists so every student is assessed against the same clinical benchmark
- Instructor-led demonstration followed by supervised repeated practice (not one-off demonstration)
Every skill practiced here is a skill students will be expected to perform correctly, under supervision, from day one of their clinical placement — the skill lab is where the margin for error belongs, not the hospital ward.
