Beyond the core academic curriculum, HIMS College of Nursing runs structured short courses that build specific, high-value clinical skills — skills that are often the difference between hesitation and competence in a real emergency.
BLS — Basic Life Support
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is one of the most practical skills a nurse can hold, and HIMS treats it as a non-negotiable part of clinical readiness. The course is taught through a combination of instructor demonstration, supervised manikin practice, and a final competency assessment — not just a lecture and a certificate.
Course Content
- Recognising cardiac arrest and activating the emergency response chain
- High-quality, uninterrupted chest compressions
- Rescue breathing and bag-valve-mask ventilation
- Safe and correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) in adults and infants
- Team-based resuscitation scenarios under time pressure
BLS certification is aligned with internationally recognised resuscitation guidelines and is a prerequisite for clinical placement at both LRH and FCTH.
Other Short Courses
Additional short courses — including infection control, wound care, and community health outreach training — are scheduled periodically throughout the academic year. Announcements are posted on the Student’s Noticeboard and News & Events pages.
